Money, revenge, madness... They had their own reasons to commit these murders. Some of them were alone, some of them had partners but there is one thing in common: They are all really terrifying.

20. Caroline Grills

Caroline was an Australian serial killer who killed four of her family members by poisoning them with Thallium. She was sentenced to life prison in 1953 and later died due to gastric ulcer.

19. Jane Toppan

Jane Toppan, a.k.a. Jolly Jane, killed 31 people and she said she would kill more if she wasn't caught. She was a nurse who over dosed her patients with morphine and then held them until they died.

18. Miyuki Ishikawa

Commonly known as The Demon Midwife, Miyuki Ishikawa was convicted of 103 baby murders. She said that she was simply killing poor families' babies because they had no chance in life.

17. Dorothea Puente

Dorothea Puente had a boarding house in California in the 1980's. She killed her old and mentally disabled boarders in order to collect their social security checks, later burrying them to her yard.

16. Leonarda Cianciulli

Leonarda, who is known as The Soap-Maker of Correggio, killed three women with her axe in order to sacrifice them to God. She believed this would protect her son in the army. What did she do with the bodies? Teacakes and soaps!

15. Rosemary West

Rosemary West murdered 10 young women with the help of her husband at their home in England. One of her victims was her own 16 year-old daughter whom she killed by hitting her repeatedly on the head.

14. Dagmar Overbye

Dagmar was a Danish caretaker and she killed 25 children including one of her own. She had one of the most famous trials of Danish history being sentenced to death but later changed to life in prison.

13. Seema Mohan Gavit and Renuka Shinde

The killer sisters were convicted of kidnapping 13 children and murdering 9 of them. They were using the children for begging and pick-pocketing. They murdered the children once they grew up.

12. Anna Marie Hahn

She was a German born American serial killer who was sent to US by her family due to her scandalous life. She is also known as Arsenic Anna because of her murders by poisoning. Anna Marie Hahn was the first woman who was executed in the state of Ohio.

11. Marry Ann Cotton

Marry Ann Cotton was an English serial killer who was accused of killing 21 people including her husbands and her stepson. She was hanged at Durham County Gaol on 1873.

10. Beverly Allitt

Beverly Allitt is an English serial killer who murdered 4 children and attempted 3 more in the hospital where she was working. She was committed these crimes only over a period of 59 days. She is still in the prison and she was sentenced to 13 concurrent terms of life imprisonment.

9. Juana Barraza

Juana Barraza from Mexico killed 11 elderly women due to her unending rage to her mother who had let a man rape Juana in return of a beer. Her nickname is La Mataviejitas and it is even more scary that she is a professional wrestler.

8. Janie Lou Gibbs

Janie Lou Gibbs was an American serial killer who killed her husband, her three sons and her grandson. She inherited $31,000 from the insurance but she blocked the requests for autopsies which caused suspicion. She was convicted of poisoning the five members of her family but she was released in April 1999 due to her severe Parkinson's. She died one year later on 2010.

7. Amelia Dyer

Amelia Dyer was a professional nurse and a baby farmer from England. She took money from people to look after babies but let them all die by neglect. She was also known as The Reading Baby Farmer.

6. Darya Nikolajevna Saltykova

Darya Nikolajevna Saltykova who is also known as Saltychikha was a Russian serial killer. She was a noblewoman and she tortured and killed over 100 of her serfs. Saltykova was chained on a public square for an hour and then was sent imprisonment for life to Ivanovsky Convent in Moscow.

5. Delphine LaLaurie

Delphine LaLaurie was a wealthy member of the society of Louisiana. She had killed and tortured her several household slaves. She was never caught and she fled to France before she could be brought to justice. She died in Paris on 1842.

4. Velma Barfield

Velma Barfield was an American serial killer who has killed at least four people with poison. One of her victims was her own mother. She was the first woman put to death by lethal injection in the history of U.S.

3. Aileen Carol Wuornos

Aileen Carol Wuornos was a lesbian who was convicted of five murders between 1989-1990. She killed her victims and later hid them in the forest. She was executed in 2002.

2. Elizabeth Báthory

Elizabeth Báthory, a.k.a. The Blood Countess, was a ruthless serial killer from Hungary. It is believed that she has tortured 612 teenage girls in a hanging cage and took a shower with their blood while standing under the cage. All she wanted was to become younger.

1. Nannie Doss

Nannie Doss killed her four husbands, her mother, sister, her mother-in-law and her grandson by using arsenic. Her nickname was "The Giggling Granny" because she always giggled during her interrogations.
